And the Winner Is...
The winner of RefuSHE’s Fashion Challenge 2022: Destination Nairobi is… Monica Kanari!
The judges were extremely impressed by Monica's intricate beadwork and attention to detail, as well as the beautiful integration of her mentee's story. The best part? Her mentee, Elizabeth, was the only RefuSHE mentee who also served as a Fashion Challenge runway model! Monica collaborated with Elizabeth Yar, a young refugee woman from South Sudan who fled to escape a forced marriage as a teen.
“In our outfit, we want to show that she still can be a child,” said Monica of her collaboration with Elizabeth. “There’s still something beautiful in her life. Her life doesn't come to an end, but RefuSHE is giving her an opportunity to explore the world.”
Monica’s design features the Angie Golden Shower fabric from RefuSHE’s Artisan Collective, which can be purchased as a scarf!
ABOUT THE DESIGNER: MONICA KANARI
Monica Kanari has been in the fashion industry for over 20 years and currently runs the brand MK Monica Kanari. Her brand specializes in producing high-quality, custom-made evening, occasional, and corporate outfits with a contemporary African flair for men, women, and children. Ethnicity is an inspiration that will catch your eye in almost all her creations and Monica takes a keen interest in making sure that her garments produce zero waste.
ABOUT THE MENTEE: ELIZABETH YAR
Elizabeth Yar was born in South Sudan but fled to Kenya in 2012 to escape a forced marriage. She has since completed her high school education and enrolled in RefuSHE's computer training program. Elizabeth dreams of becoming a successful runway model and mentor to other young refugee girls.
