Hanisa's Transformation Through Yoga
Hanisa is a 22-year-old Somali refugee and the sixth of ten siblings. In 2022, upon completing high school, she discovered RefuSHE’s digital skills training/ICT program and eagerly enrolled, having always sought the opportunity to acquire computer skills.
Upon joining the ICT class, Hanisa learned about the yoga program offered by RefuSHE’s Mental Health Department and promptly participated in all eight sessions. The yoga program was created in partnership with The Yoga Alliance Foundation and provides staff, refugee students, and para-counselors with access to trauma-informed yoga. Initially, she had only witnessed yoga on TV and perceived it as solely a physical exercise. However, her perspective changed during the sessions. "Since I started the sessions, I learned that yoga is a combination of mindful and physical exercise and that anyone can do it," she says.
Reflecting on her initial challenges, Hanisa acknowledges that the first sessions were not easy for her. Nonetheless, she praises her instructor for being patient and understanding, allowing her to progress at her own pace. "The instructor's humility and understanding made a significant difference. By the third session, I could feel the change in my body “she adds.
Before engaging in yoga, Hanisa struggled with painful cramps. However, she found relief through yoga poses recommended by her instructor. "I rarely feel the pain anymore," she explains gratefully.
Hanisa attests to a notable improvement in her energy levels, describing the sessions as a rejuvenating experience, especially before heading to class. "I always looked forward to the next session; it was enjoyable, and it really sharpened my concentration in class afterward. It was like I transformed into a different person," she shares.
Among her favorite poses are body scanning, mountain pose, and child’s pose. She notes that learning these poses alleviated her back pain and added to the overall positive impact yoga has had on her well-being.
Yoga not only became a physical practice for Hanisa, but also contributed to her emotional well-being. She learned to manage her temper and anger by centering her thoughts on something or someone she loves, a valuable lesson from her instructor. “Learning this practice has changed the way I react when something angers me” she claims.
Hanisa emphasizes that yoga extended beyond individual benefits; it improved her interactions with classmates. Practicing intense physical exercises together enhanced their connection. "Partner poses were great. You get to interact with someone while doing a pose together," she shares.
Hanisa continues to incorporate certain yoga poses into her daily routine at home. "Yoga is now part of my routine. I have witnessed its benefits for both my mind and body. It has taught me to listen to my body more," she affirms.
