A Beauty Business Worth Boasting About: Henrietta’s Story

Henrietta is a 20-year-old woman who fled her war-torn home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2019. She arrived in Kenya alone and without any family or friends. She was scared and uncertain about her future.

In 2021, her life took a turn for the better when she found refuge and a healing environment at RefuSHE's Safe House. In 2022, Henrietta's determination led her to join RefuSHE's Girls Empowerment Program (GEP) where she enrolled in a Grade III vocational training course in tailoring. After successfully completing this training, Henrietta wanted to learn about beauty. Earlier this year, thanks to a remarkable opportunity sponsored by UNHCR, Henrietta enrolled in a beauty course at Vera Beauty College in Nairobi.

From an early age, Henrietta had always displayed a natural talent for hairstyling and this opportunity allowed her to further develop her skills in beauty and nail care. During the duration of the course, she immersed herself in mastering various techniques in nail art, makeup application, and massage therapy. She not only honed her practical skills but also gained confidence and a deep sense of accomplishment. The experience allowed her to envision a future filled with potential.

After completing the beauty course, Henrietta enrolled in an internship for a few weeks to refine her newfound skills. She did not give up after failing to secure a job immediately after her internship but remained determined to stay the course and practice her craft.

Today, only a few months after deciding to formally pursue her passion, Henrietta is employed in a thriving salon at a busy mall in Nairobi where she earns a remarkable 40% commission on her services. On average, she earns approximately KES 6,000 per week, marking a significant milestone in her journey toward financial independence. Henrietta is immensely grateful for the opportunity to pursue the beauty course, which has paved the way for a brighter future.

With her sights set on entrepreneurial success, Henrietta aspires to open a spa one day that proudly bears her name. She believes that with hard work, a conducive business environment, and the right support, her dream is entirely achievable. Henrietta hopes to establish not only a successful beauty empire but also a platform to empower and uplift other young women in her community.
