Last week, we invited you to share in UNHCR Special Envoy, Angelina Jolie’s, visit RefuSHE in anticipation of World Refugee Day 2018 on June 20th. During her visit, Angelina got to know one of the incredible young women in our programs, Josephine.

Josephine is a leader in RefuSHE’s artisan collective, a student, and a role model to many. As a child, she was bounced between Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps. Unable to provide for herself and her brother – she was forced into survival sex.

Josephine came to Nairobi in 2015 accompanied by a woman who offered to host her so that she could attend school. Eager for a fresh start, she started school with her host's children. One day, the woman left on a business trip and did not return. Josephine and her children were forced to vacate the houses – as they could no longer afford the rent. It was then that she found RefuSHE.

“We were left on the street, and I decide to go to UN office in Westlands. We were taken to [the RefuSHE] Safe House where I got shelter, a home, and a family.”

Now 23, Josephine is studying public health at university and is eager to start helping her community. She is also the workshop leader in the artisan collective. Her favorite scarf in the Spring Summer Collection? The Josephine, of course!

This month, in celebration of World Refugee Day, we hope you stand along Angelina Jolie and RefuSHE in support of the young women we serve.  Until June 20th, every dollar donated to RefuSHE will be matched up to $25,000.

We hope that you will consider making a gift to ensure that young women, like Josephine, receive the support that they deserve.
