DORIS NELIMA

Chief Financial Officer

Doris Nelima joined RefuSHE in January 2021 as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and served as RefuSHE’s interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from August 2021 - October 2022. She is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA-K) with over ten years of experience in external audit, internal audit, accounting, sub-grantee management, grants management, and proposal writing for federal and non-federal grants. Doris has served for over five years as financial technical lead and key financial liaison person for an annual US $14 million grants portfolio comprising at least 20 awards annually, including consortium awards and multi-year federal grants from USAID, CDC, FCDO, EU, UN agencies, and various foundations. She has also managed at least 9 sub-awards annually to community-based organizations (CB0s) in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu counties including overseeing their capacity assessment and developing plans to address gaps in their operational and financial system capacities. Notably, she has been instrumental in instituting continuous quality improvement in internal control systems to enhance maximum programmatic impact for each dollar received from donors whilst improving compliance levels to organizational and grant regulations.

Doris’ expertise extends to financial analysis which has seen her conduct a continuum of financial analyses including costing of multi-year organization strategic plans, financial analyses for grant proposals, grant burn rates and budget re-direction analyses, and overall organizational cost-efficiency analyses to inform decision-making on efficiency-enhancement strategies. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Finance from Strathmore University and is currently pursuing a Master of Commerce degree in Forensic Accounting at Strathmore University.
