IWD 2023: Q&A With ICT Training Coordinator Susan

At RefuSHE, we believe that teaching digital skills to women and girls is imperative to furthering gender equality in Kenya and across the globe. In celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality,” we are sharing a special Q&A series with the staff and students behind RefuSHE’s digital learning programs! Join us for an exclusive look at our work from the women gaining (and teaching) the skills refugees need to thrive in the modern work world.

We are wrapping up our month-long celebration of International Women’s Day by sharing an interview with Susan Thiari, RefuSHE’s ICT Training Coordinator. Not only is Susan leading by example and paving the way for women in tech, but she is also helping to empower refugee women and girls to gain the skills they need to thrive in the online marketplace. Susan plays a vital role in our ICT Lab and is a mentor and role model for young refugees working toward financial freedom.

Q: What is your title and how long have you worked with RefuSHE?

A: I am the ICT Training Coordinator for RefuSHE’s ICT Program which empowers refugee women and girls with the digital skills that are essential for competing in the online marketplace. I have been working with RefuSHE for two years now.

Q: What is your educational background?

A: I possess a bachelor’s degree in ICT as well as several certifications in both ICT and Ed-tech fields. I am currently training in gender-responsive training.

Q: What about RefuSHE’s mission initially intrigued you?

A: Women’s empowerment. I have a passion for supporting women, especially those from marginalized communities. It’s important for women to put their mark in a heavily male-dominated tech space. Over time, the digital divide has widened, and women shy off from competing for the many opportunities available in tech. RefuSHE’s holistic model empowers women to be limitless and reach their potential.

Q: What have been the challenges of launching and running the ICT Lab?

A: Initially funding was a challenge and we kicked off with low-tech devices that could hardly accomplish the tasks. Fortunately, through the generosity of our donors, we have acquired devices that meet the requirements of the training.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running the ICT Lab?

A: When the girls earn their first dollar, their expressions are priceless. The confidence they have knowing they can now take care of their needs and improve their livelihoods is very fulfilling.

Q: Beyond digital skills, what do you think participants will gain from being part of the ICT lab?

A: The participants get access to various forums and clubs where they receive continuous mentorship to grow their skills. In addition, they get access to various psychosocial services available at RefuSHE to promote their well-being.

Q: How does the ICT lab help promote gender equality?

A: The digital skills training encourages women to progress towards a gender-equal and sustainable future by competing in the digital marketplace.

Q: How do you see technology’s role in the lives of refugees?

A: Technology is one of the most impactful tools a refugee can have. Many barriers that refugees face when looking for white-collar jobs are lifted within the tech space. The online marketplace makes it easier for refugees to earn a dignified wage.

Q: What is your hope for the future of women and girls in tech?

I am looking forward to a future of women leaders and innovators. When we empower women in tech, we are creating solutions for the future.
— Susan Thiari, ICT Training Coordinator

A: I am looking forward to a future of women leaders and innovators. Most of the world’s biggest problems are yet to be solved. When we empower women in tech, we are creating solutions for the future.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

A: There is still a need for more organizations to come forward and support refugees in accessing dignified livelihoods. The demand for tech skillsets is still very high. I encourage others to get involved and support young women refugees in tech!
